âHow was your afternoon off?â Laura called to him from the kitchen. Peter could smell ratatouille. He loved ratatouille, although there were several years where he couldnât face it because they had made it far too often. Absence makes both the heart and the stomach grow fonder.
âGood! Pippin did really well. Iâm sure heâll qualify for the Worlds this year.â
Laura made a positive non-verbal noise.
âAnd I found something peculiar in the Jarvinen Forest.â More lies. He couldnât stomach two people yelling at him today. Kevin might tell her about their encounter at Tomâs, but there was no possible upside to explaining everything about the paper to her.
âOh?â
âItâs nothing, just a scrap of paper, so I picked it up to get rid of litter and then saw an unfamiliar script and was curious. Any idea?â
Laura dried her hands, took the paper from Peter and held it directly under one of the spotlights that illuminated the countertops.
âHangul,â she said immediately.
âHangul?â
âKorean alphabet. I think it has 24 letters. Itâs supposed to be very logical.â
âHuh. No idea what it says, though, eh?â Peter chuckled.
âNot the foggiest.â She handed it back to him. âIf youâre dying of curiosity you could check with Anne Shin. Her parents are from Korea and Iâm sure she still speaks it.â
âAnne Shin?â
âYou know, the principal of the elementary school.â
âRight, married to Bill Nurmi. They used to bring a pair of cats to the clinic, but they were under his name.â
âYup, thatâs the one.â Laura turned back to her cooking and said, over her shoulder, âDinner will be another half hour.â
